Patna: The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna is in the final stages of constructing a new 1,200-bed, seven-storey multi-super-speciality hospital, set to significantly expand advanced healthcare services across the state by the end of 2026. According to Prof Dr Binde Kumar, director of IGIMS, about 60% of the seven-storey, state-of-the-art building has been completed. The hospital is expected to open to patients by December 2026, featuring robotic-assisted surgery, expanded intensive care facilities, and one of the largest emergency units in the state.Also Read:Bihar to upgrade all district hospitals into super-specialty facilities: Mangal PandeySpeaking to Patna Press, Hospital officials said the project marks one of the most ambitious public healthcare upgrades in Bihar in recent years. Once operational, the new building will substantially increase access to high-level medical care, reducing the need for patients to travel to other states for complex procedures.The number of modular operation theatres has been increased from 12 to 14, and the intensive care unit will expand to 92 beds. A 164-bed emergency unit on the ground floor will function as an “emergency super centre,” equipped with six dedicated operation theatres and a central sterilisation service department. This integrated design will allow trauma care, emergency surgeries, and critical interventions to be handled under one roof.
IGIMS is also preparing to introduce robotic-assisted surgery later this year. Led by medical superintendent Prof Dr Manish Mandal, a team of doctors is currently undergoing specialised training in Delhi, practising procedures using AI-enabled robotic simulators in gynaecology, urology, and other complex surgical fields, including prostate and gallbladder operations. Robotic surgeries are expected to begin within two months of the training’s completion.
Each floor of the hospital has been strategically planned to host specific super-specialty departments, with dedicated wards for gastroenterology, gynaecology, paediatrics, mental health, general medicine, neurology, nephrology, urology, spine, and orthopaedic care.
