IGMC Shimla Viral Video: Second doctor named in FIR, counter-complaint filed

Shimla: The name of the second doctor from Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, who was seen in a viral video holding the patient’s legs, while the accused doctor allegedly punched the patient, has now been included in the First Investigation Report (FIR). 

The FIR was registered after the patient filed a complaint against both doctors, alleging harassment and assault during the bronchoscopy test results review. In the complaint, the patient claimed that the doctor misbehaved with him by calling him ‘tu’, which is an informal way of saying “you.” 

Medical Dialogues recently reported that the senior resident doctor from the Pulmonary Medicine department at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), who overnight became the centre of controversy and was suspended after a viral video allegedly showing him punching a patient multiple times in the face, has clarified his side of the story. He claimed that the patient became angry, abused him and physically assaulted him first.

The doctor stated that the patient became abusive and non-cooperative, used derogatory and obscene language, and then physically assaulted him by punching and kicking him. He further alleged that the patient attempted to attack him again and issued death threats during the altercation.

Backing the doctor, several associations, including Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA), Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) and others came in support of the two doctors. 

Addressing a press conference, Dr Sohil Sharma, President, Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA), said that any incident has “two sides” and that the association has formally written to both the Medical Superintendent and the State Association of Medical and Dental College Teachers (SAMDCOT), raising concerns about regulations and due process.

The doctor who is now terminated from sevice from service under Clause-9 of the Resident Doctor Policy, 2025, has also filed a counter-complaint against the patient on Tuesday.

However, the police have not yet registered a case on the doctor’s complaint. 

Speaking to The Indian Express, the police said, “The doctor’s complaint is under consideration. So far, we have not lodged any FIR on his complaint. However, we have included the name of another doctor, who was seen holding the legs of patient Arjun Singh in the video.”
