Chandigarh: A seven-member medical board has found evidence of medical negligence in the death of a 41-year-old actor and bodybuilder, Varinder Singh Ghuman, who passed away last year following a surgical procedure at a private hospital in Amritsar. Medical Dialogues had previously reported that bodybuilder and actor Varinder Singh Ghuman passed away due to cardiac arrest following a minor surgical procedure at a private hospital in Amritsar. The seven-member board, formed on October 31 under the chairmanship of the Amritsar Civil Surgeon, included specialists in orthopaedics, medicine, cardiology, anaesthesia, and forensic science. The panel was tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the actor’s death.On February 26, the board’s report was forwarded to the Amritsar Police Commissioner for further action.
According to the civil surgeon’s report, both Ghuman’s family and the hospital authorities were given equal opportunity to present their case. The board reviewed medical records summoned from the hospital and recorded statements from the complainant as well as the treating doctors.
The report mentioned that after reviewing the statements and medical records, the board members were of the opinion that there was a lack of transparency, failure to explain complications, and deviation from the standard protocols. “There is a medical negligence resulting in violation of patient rights,” it stated. Commissioner of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said, “Though I have yet to go through the report thoroughly, necessary action will be taken,” reports Hindustan Times.
Following Ghuman’s death, the hospital had issued a statement outlining its version of events. According to the hospital, the actor was evaluated in the outpatient department on October 6, 2025, for pain and restricted movement in his right shoulder. He was advised to undergo arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with biceps tenodesis.
The hospital maintained that Ghuman had no known comorbidities and that the surgery on October 9 was completed around 3 pm with stable vital parameters. However, at approximately 3.35 pm, he developed a sudden cardiac arrhythmia.
