Alleged Medical Negligence: Nurse suspended after Toddler’s Thumb severed at Indore Hospital

Indore: In an alleged case of medical negligence, the thumb of a one-and-a-half-year-old child was reportedly chopped off at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College in Indore while a nurse was removing a paediatric cannula from the baby’s hand. Hospital authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to the news reports, the incident occurred on December 24, when a resident of Betma brought her infant to MGM Medical College after the child fell ill. Doctors diagnosed the child with pneumonia and admitted him to the chest ward, where an intravenous (IV) line was inserted for treatment.Also Read:Infant death in MP sparks Ayush action: Drugs seized, samples sent for testingSpeaking to ETV Bharat, she said, “My baby’s hand was swollen due to the intravenous (IV) line since the night before. The next morning, we called the nurses several times, but they didn’t respond. Finally, a nurse arrived, and while changing the IV line, she used scissors to remove the tape from the needle in the hand and, in the process, cut off the thumb.”Following the incident, the accused nursing Officer has been suspended. Additionally, the salaries of three other nurses who were part of the duty team have been ordered to be withheld for one month. MGM Medical College Dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria added that further action will be taken after the completion of the departmental inquiry.The incident triggered panic and outrage in the ward, with the child’s mother creating a commotion and alerting hospital authorities. Specialists were immediately informed, and the child was referred to a super-speciality hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors from MGM Medical College performed emergency surgery to reattach the severed thumb. Hospital authorities confirmed that the surgery was successful and that the infant’s condition is currently stable.
MGM Medical College Dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria said, “As soon as the matter came to my notice, I instructed the Superintendent of MY Hospital to constitute an inquiry committee to probe the matter and submit a report within 24 hours. A nurse went to remove a venflon from the infant’s hand, and it was secured with a Dynaplast adhesive bandage.
