Surat: In a shocking incident, a 75-year-old Ayurvedic doctor allegedly threw acid on his wife during a maintenance case hearing at a family court in Surat on Friday, triggering panic inside the courtroom and raising serious concerns over security at the court complex. The incident took place on the fifth floor of the Surat District Seva Sadan’s A-block while court proceedings were underway. The attack reportedly occurred in the presence of the presiding judge, leading to chaos inside the courtroom.Also Read:Man throws acid on woman inside Gurugram Hospital, escapesAccording to the news reports, the couple, who separated in 2017, had been involved in long-standing legal disputes over maintenance and recovery. The woman had filed multiple petitions in the family court (2021, 2023, 2025) and the district court (2021, 2024). In 2023, the husband allegedly attacked her with a knife outside the district court, resulting in an attempted murder case, for which he was out on bail at the time of Friday’s hearing.According to the woman’s lawyer, the couple was in court for a maintenance and recovery matter. The accused, seated in the row behind his wife, allegedly pulled out a bottle of acid and threw it on her after refusing to accept certain conditions in the settlement. He had reportedly been pressuring her to withdraw the attempted murder case. When she insisted on proceeding with the cases, he attacked her, reports TOI.
The woman suffered acid burns on her mouth and other parts of her body, and damage to the lens of her left eye. Several lawyers seated nearby were also affected by splashes of acid and received immediate medical attention.
In a dramatic turn of events, the accused allegedly consumed poison shortly after the attack in an apparent attempt to end his life. He, too, was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.Court security personnel quickly detained the accused before he could flee.
