Bareilly: In a disturbing incident at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College in Meerut, a 30-year-old ward boy was terminated after allegedly mistaking spirit for water while refilling the oxygen chamber of a nebuliser intended for a four-year-old child. Fortunately, other staff members noticed the negligence in time, preventing any harm to the child.

Speaking to TOI, College principal R C Gupta said that the ward boy was inebriated at the time and had a history of reporting for duty in a drunken state. “He was removed immediately after the matter came to my notice. We have instructed ward in-charges and heads of departments to take immediate action against such staff,” Gupta said.

According to another ward boy, the accused staff member had previously been removed twice by the ward in charge for negligence, but each time returned because the principal was reportedly unaware of the prior incidents. He added that the ward boy also got into a verbal altercation with the child’s parents following the incident, prompting senior staff members to step in and take him away. No police case has been registered, as the parents chose not to file a complaint.

This marks the second recent case of misconduct by outsourced staff at LLRM Medical College. Last week, two female ward attendants and another ward boy were terminated after CCTV footage showed them assaulting a deaf and mute woman in the ‘lawaris’ (unclaimed) ward. The video allegedly showed them inserting a stick into the woman’s mouth following a misunderstanding. No police case was filed in that incident either.

As per news reports by TOI, Gupta said, “We are very strict about any kind of nuisance in the college or hospital, and we will immediately remove people involved in such acts.” No police case was filed in that incident either.
