Kolkata: Following multiple summons and the rejection of his anticipatory bail plea, former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata surrendered before the CBI First Court in Alipore on Tuesday. The court remanded him to judicial custody until February 17. According to the news reports, former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Akhtar Ali, who had earlier raised allegations of financial irregularities against then-principal Sandip Ghosh, has been named as an accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the same case. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.The controversy first surfaced amid widespread unrest at RG Kar Medical College following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate student in August 2024. The tragic incident triggered massive protests by doctors, students, and members of the public. During the demonstrations, Ali’s allegations of financial irregularities against Ghosh intensified scrutiny of the hospital’s administration and the role of the police.
CBI officials informed the court that Ali failed to appear despite multiple summons. His lawyer stated that he had been summoned in mid-December but had approached the Calcutta High Court, citing ill health as a reason for his absence.
Sources said Ali, who had been admitted to the hospital until last Friday for injuries and ailments, was discharged on Saturday. An arrest warrant was issued, but he could not surrender that day because his lawyer was unavailable. The CBI advocate sought judicial remand for Ali, reports Telegraph India.
Counsel for former principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh told the court that Ali had “direct links with the scam” and had “falsely implicated us to save himself.”
After hearing submissions from both sides, the court ordered that Ali be remanded to judicial custody until February 17.
According to the Indian Express media report, the court order stated, “Due to the late submission of the chargesheet and the appearance of this accused person, all the witnesses have to be recalled and re-examined and/or re-cross examined. In the backdrop of circumstances and earlier posturing of this accused as a whistleblower, it would be precarious for the fate of the trial of the case to enlarge the accused person on bail”.
The court also raised doubts about the medical documents submitted by Ali, noting contradictions. It pointed out that a prescription dated February 5, 2026, did not recommend hospital admission, yet Ali appeared to have been admitted to INDUS Nursing Home on February 6, 2026, as per the admission form.Also Read:RG Kar victim’s parents to set up hospital in her memoryMeanwhile, Ali, after being taken into custody, told the Indian Express, “It is my bad luck.
